Homeowner's Insurance

Homeowners insurance provides financial protection against disasters. A standard policy insures the home itself and the things you keep in it.

Homeowners insurance is a package policy. This means that it covers both damage to your property and your liability or legal responsibility for any injuries and property damage you or members of your family cause to other people. This includes damage caused by household pets.

Damage caused by most disasters is covered but there are exceptions. The most significant are damage caused by floods, earthquakes and poor maintenance. You must buy two separate policies for flood and earthquake coverage. Maintenance-related problems are the homeowners' responsibility.

Auto Insurance

Auto insurance protects you against financial loss if you have an accident. It is a contract between you and the insurance company. You agree to pay the premium and the insurance company agrees to pay your losses as defined in your policy.

Auto insurance provides property, liability and medical coverage:

  • Property coverage pays for damage to or theft of your car.
  • Liability coverage pays for your legal responsibility to others for bodily injury or property damage.
  • Medical coverage pays for the cost of treating injuries, rehabilitation and sometimes lost wages and funeral expenses.

An auto insurance policy is comprised of six different kinds of coverage. Most states require you to buy some, but not all, of these coverages. If you're financing a car, your lender may also have requirements.

Renter's Insurance

If you rent an apartment or own a condominium, you need insurance to protect your belongings. While your landlord or condo association might have insurance, it only protects the building. Your belongings are not covered under those policies.

There are several types of residential insurance policies. The HO-4 policy is designed for renters, while the HO-6 policy is for condo owners. Both HO-4 and HO-6 cover losses to your personal property from 17 types of perils:

  • Fire or lightning
  • Windstorm or hail
  • Explosion
  • Riot or civil commotion
  • Aircraft
  • Vehicles
  • Smoke
  • Vandalism or malicious mischief
  • Theft
  • Damage by glass or safety-glazing material that is part of a building
  • Volcanic eruption
  • Falling objects
  • Weight of ice, snow, or sleet
  • Water-related damage from home utilities
  • Electrical surge damage.

Floods and earthquakes aren't on the list. If you live in an area prone to either, you'll need to buy a separate policy or a rider.

Boat Insurance

Boat Insurance is insurance for a watercraft, whether that watercraft is a boat, a sailboat, a yacht or some other marine vehicle.

"In 2002, nearly nine out of ten of all drowning victims were not wearing their life jackets."
- U.S.Coast Guard

Each year hundreds of lives are lost... thousands are injured... and millions of dollars of property damage occurs because of preventable recreational boating accidents on U.S. waterways. Too often pleasure outings turn tragic. The boat operator, passenger, or concerned individual — can make a difference.

A boating accident report must be filed when...

  • A life is lost due to the accident.
  • Someone is injured and requires medical attention beyond first aid.
  • There is damage by or to the vessel and other property.
  • Any person on board a vessel disappears (under circumstances indicating possible death or injury).

Boating Accidents Include:

  • Capsizing Falls
  • Overboard Collisions
  • Sinking/Flooding
  • Explosions
  • Disappearance
  • Fire

Health Insurance

Today, health care costs are high, and getting higher. Who will pay your bills if you have a serious accident or a major illness? You buy health insurance for the same reason you buy other kinds of insurance, to protect yourself financially. With health insurance, you protect yourself and your family in case you need medical care that could be very expensive. You can't predict what your medical bills will be. In a good year, your costs may be low. But if you become ill, your bills could be very high. If you have insurance, many (or all) of your costs will be covered.

Life Insurance

You need life insurance if some person would experience a significant financial loss in the event of your death. A common example of this is the family breadwinner whose income totally or partially supports a family. The death of that person would result in loss of income and financial harm for the remaining family members. Other reasons are to put your kids through school, pay the car note, mortgage, or other debts you have left behind, and pay funeral expenses. Those who might be leaving estates of $650,0000 or more often need life insurance to pay for estate taxes.

Business partners are another important example. The death of one partner might obligate the other partners to buy out the heirs: the life policy can be the source of funds.

Worker's Compensation Insurance

Employers have a legal responsibility to their employees to make the workplace safe. However, accidents happen even when every reasonable safety measure has been taken.

To protect employers from lawsuits resulting from workplace accidents and to provide medical care and compensation for lost income to employees hurt in workplace accidents, in almost every state, businesses are required to buy workers compensation insurance. Workers compensation insurance covers workers injured on the job, whether they're hurt on the workplace premises or elsewhere, or in auto accidents while on business. It also covers work-related illnesses.

Workers compensation provides payments to injured workers, without regard to who was at fault in the accident, for time lost from work and for medical and rehabilitation services. It also provides death benefits to surviving spouses and dependents.
